« Les Justes » Amazing Albert Camus’s play into a musical tragedy
Moscow: young revolutionaries are plotting a terrorist attack…We are not in 21th century…one century before 1905. They are far from imagining that their “intolerable suffering” in the face of injustice is going to produce the opposite of the desired effect, leading to the unleashing of a murderous chain of events that will shape the 20th century. In taking on Les Justes, Abd Al Malik radically reimagines its interpretation by turning the play into what he calls a “musical tragedy.”
Fresh and modern : The production combines declamation—rap and poetry slam—and theater with the support of vocal and instrumental music that lands somewhere between hip-hop and electro. Through their way of handling an intentionally rhythmic and musical language, the actors are no longer merely actors, but also poets who bring to light the life and death of a barely emerging utopia, the story of the breakdown of an ideal.
